About

It all started as a way to cut back. To ease up and be able to put more focus into my projects. To limit myself to 5 side projects besides my day job. And thus 5 on the Side was created.

But if you are anything like me, the ideas and projects keep on coming. 5 turns into 10 and 10 becomes 20. And of course one of the last things on those lists is your own site.

My name is Jay Peters and this is 5 on the Side. Some days, I'm designing interfaces for programs, mobile apps or websites. Other days, I'm developing the same items. And when I'm not sitting in front of my computer, drawing table or plastering my walls with sticky notes, I'm often out shooting pictures or videos.

The Sides

So what are my side projects? Here's a taste of a few of the things I've been digging into lately. If you want any more information or demos of things I've built with any of these technologies, please send me an email.

Current/Recent Coding List

This is a list of the current libraries, languages, and plugins I use.

SASS

I had been pushing this one off for a while. But now the time has come to learn it. We'll see if it's as simple and life changing as they claim.

Bones Wordpress Theme for Developers

I had been looking for a good developer theme to build my Wordpress sites off of for a while, and wouldn't you know, here's one that ties into me learning SASS too.

GSAP

GSAP is a JavaScript animation library created by Greensock. I first became familiar with Greensock a few years back when working with Actionscript. I was glad to see how much of the coding style and syntax translated to their JavaScript library. I would definitely recommend trying it out.

AnythingSlider Wordpress Plugin

Now this one I didn't get too in depth on, but I had to mention it here because I used it and loved it. It's a great plugin, especially if you want a slider that plays videos or contains html. But considering who the developers are behind it, you can only expect a great product.

PhoneGap (Cordova)

I've been working on PhoneGap projects for nearly 2 years now. I have created both iOS and Android Apps. While PhoneGap itself is fairly straightforward to use, I have a few points of advice before beginning.

  • Be sure of what you need to accomplish, especially as far as specialty design features and heavier programming concepts. JavaScript and mobile CSS has several nuances that may surprise you. Depending on the complexity of your app, you may want to consider going to all native code.
  • Don't be fooled. Code once and publish across all is a dream. You still have to debug each platform individually.
  • Be careful with requiring information from a server. Wireless networks, especially 3G, can cause a lot of timeouts, so fallbacks and retry connection buttons are important.
  • There are many more little things that I could mention. Feel free to email me with questions if you are thinking of using PhoneGap.
Current Reading and iTunes U List

You can't beat learning new stuff. Especially when there's free courses on iTunes U.

Programming Methodology - Stanford University

Whether you're new to coding or have done it for a while, it's good to go back to the basics of programming. Great refresher in thinking through top down programming. The programming language used is Java, but the methodology is universal through all coding.

Creative Problem Solving - TED

Great collection of creatives giving speeches at TED conferences. I find it to be a great way to gain inspiration for rethinking current projects.

Masters of Photography - National Geographic

A little something to fill the photography addiction.

The Design of Everyday Things - Donald Norman 1988

A classic book on user experience based design. Every UI/UX designer should have this in their collection.

Connect

So for just a little more insight into what I do. I currently work full-time as a front-end developer and all around web guy for a company in Winnipeg, MB.

And on the side (what this site is all about, right?) I do some work for various companies, organizations, non-profits and missions. These services range from design, to coding, to photography, to being advisor in technical areas.

So if you are interested in what I do or offer send me an email.
